WMC VJ Challenge 2009

WMC VJ Challenge a huge success!

by Justin on March 25, 2009

Ten top visual talents from across the globe competed head to head in a VJ challenge as about 200 spectators looked on at WMC 2009.

Hosts VJ Psyberpixie and Felix Sama introduced the rules and , alongside judges consisting of Lars Schlichting (DVJ Vision-Advanced Visual Stimulation), Dan Tait, Johnny Duece (DVDJs) and Justin Kent (Experience Jockey), had the unenviable job of ranking some of the best visual talent on display at the Winter Music Conference – VJ Challenge.

Two VJ booths contained a pair of interlinked Pioneer SVM-1000 mixers – stage left featuring 3 DVJs, stage right featuring a sole DVJ and space for laptops and accessories.

Foresite is a local dude who had some really unique content. C. Flo is a cat who came in and dominated, mixing everything from Seinfeld to Akon to U2 to Dirt Nasty, culminating in a rick roll of epic proportions then moving on to a thre-way mashup of Rihanna, Chris Brown and the Prodigy’s ‘Smack My Bitch Up.’ He even broke out a stack of google-eyed dollar bills to go with a remix of the goofy Geico commercial. fr3qnast3 wore a mouse suit.

Early on there had been a disagreement about the contest rules, which resulted in Roonie G opting out of the competition, instead playing an intermisision demo of barnstorming hollywood & hip hop on top of hype beats, while the judges tabulated the scores.

Sergey Lobodln from Moscow, Russia grabbed the top slot with a display of crisp, tightly woven graphics, taking home a coveted Pioneer DVJ-1000 DVD Turntable and complete library of DVDs from Motion Loops. No one walked away empty handed, as the event supporters and some of the contestants were generous with their cache of exclusive DVDs.

It was a very cool high energy environment. The experience of being in the same room with that many other VJ’s was unique and enlightening. For sure I hope I can do such a competition again and next time I’ll have a better idea of what to expect and how to be better prepared.

I rocked the Netzair loops I got from the competition the other night. It was great to be able to have it supplementing other material so I could do a whole night wtih completely fresh material.
